It is not just a conference but the first "International Academy on Migration", organized by the United Nations, to discuss and train people who, in the countries of origin of migrants and in destination countries, are called upon to deal with a phenomenon of planetary dimensions.

The initiative has been taken by the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization, which has designed and produced it in conjunction with the Global Migration Group, which encompasses 16 UN agencies and was created in 2006 in Geneva to produce a coordinated response to the challenges that international migration poses to governments and civil society in member countries of the UN.
In the presence of Mayor Fassino, the Academy on International Migration will open with a speech by the Executive Director of the ILO, Assane Diop. In his speech, Diop will point out that "in 2010 alone, 214 million human beings left their country of origin in search of employment, welfare and social security. A phenomenon of this magnitude cannot be governed at the level of individual countries; it requires policies coordinated by the international community".
Besides the UN, two Italian institutions, the International and European Forum on Migration Research (FIERI), from Turin, and the European University Institute in Florence, have made an important contribution to the event.
During the two weeks of the course, which is organised thanks to the contribution of the Compagnia di San Paolo, the Italian Government and the ILO, practical examples of good practice in labour market management, social protection and effective integration of migrant communities in host countries will be discussed. If this first event is as successful as the organizers expect, Turin can hope to become the place where the world’s leading experts meet each year to take stock of the migration phenomenon and measure the ability to manage it in an efficient and orderly manner.
